Considering mesohabitat scale in ecological impact assessment of sediment flushing

Benthic macroinvertebrates respond to several factors characterizing the physical habitats, as water depth, current and streambed substrate. Thus, anthropogenic disturbances altering these may have different effects on benthos, also depending mesohabitats. These include sediment flushing operations, commonly carried out recover reservoir capacity, investigating their at mesohabitat scale could be relevant for an adequate ecological impact assessment of operations. Here, we compared benthic macroinvertebrate communities sampled before after a controlled operation in three mesohabitats (a pool, riffle step-pool) Alpine stream. Contrary from expectations, composition assemblages was not significantly among Moreover, more significant terms density rather than richness. Two stressor-specific indices were tested, but only one (the Siltation Index LoTic EcoSystems − SILTES) clearly detected community structure. Finally, some differences temporal trajectories recovery times pre-flushing conditions observed mesohabitats, both if considered separately all possible combinations accounted for. Particularly, most sensitive mesohabitat, fully recovering year disturbance.
